Up On The Roof: Chimney & Roof Repair and Maintenance

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

It might not seem like it right now, but Spring and Summer are just around the corner. Over the Winter months, your roof and chimney can take a bit of a battering from a variety of elements. In this post we'll discuss the most common types of damage to roofing and chimneys, and how you can prevent and repair them.

Types of Damage to Roofing:

Wind Damage - Strong winds can cause shingles to lift and tear away from the roof, exposing the underlying layers to the elements.

Hail Damage - Hail can cause dents, cracks, or even punctures in shingles, which can lead to leaks.

Water Damage - Water can cause the roof to rot or weaken, leading to leaks and other issues.

UV Damage - The sun's UV rays can cause shingles to fade and become brittle over time, making them more vulnerable to damage.

Tree Damage - Falling branches or trees can damage the roof and cause leaks.

Prevention and Repair of Roofing Damage:

To prevent damage to your roofing, it's important to have regular inspections and maintenance performed by a professional roofing contractor. We can identify any potential issues and get your builders on to the roof to make repairs without needing scaffolding.

In the event that your roof is damaged, it's important to address the issue as soon as possible to prevent further damage and potential leaks. Repairs may include patching or replacing damaged shingles, repairing flashing around chimneys and other roof penetrations, and replacing damaged or rotted decking.

Types of Damage to Chimneys:

Cracks - Over time, the mortar between bricks can deteriorate, causing cracks to form in the chimney structure.

Water Damage - Water can seep into the chimney through cracks, causing damage to the chimney liner or chimney crown.

Creosote Build-up - Creosote is a by-product of burning wood in a fireplace, and it can build up in the chimney over time, potentially causing a fire hazard.

Blockages - Birds, debris, and other materials can become lodged in the chimney, blocking the flow of smoke and causing smoke damage to the interior of the home.

Chimney Repair Job:

A chimney repair and fixing some broken ridge tiles. The chimney stack is for 2 neighbouring houses and both had leaks. Flashing had come off which I replaced and then some pretty major pointing. Hopefully cured the problem.
